Stress, I’m talking about stress.

Where would you be without it?

Who would you be without it?

Would you have more time to be with the people you love, and do the things you’ve dreamed about?

Have time to relax and just be? Or does the thought of not being busy all the time cause anxiety?

I read something about boredom the other day and it got me thinking. What is boredom? Is it reading a book, taking a walk, or listening to music? That doesn’t sound boring to me.

We lead such busy lives today, if we have “free” time, we fill it. We do chores we’ve neglected, run errands that could wait, fill all our time with “productivity”. Long gone is the day of sitting on the porch, doing nothing. Well, seemingly nothing.

It’s actually a rest and reset. If we look back to the days of our ancestors, they knew a thing or two about balance. After a long day or weeks work, they took time to rest and reset. They sat on porches, talked to neighbors. Read a book. Took a blanket down to the local watering hole and had a picnic. And the kids? They played kickball, baseball, rode bikes with no destination, just pure abandon and joy.

When is the last time you played?

What I mean by is, when is the last time you did something solely for the reward of pure abandon and joy?

Stress can take over our lives easily if we let it. When we fill every moment, instead of seizing the moment and being in it, we steal our own joy.

Lots of stress triggers are beyond our control; financial obligations, changing jobs, moving. There are situations requiring our full attention, but it doesn’t mean we allow them to take over our lives completely. We must learn to manage our reactions to stressful situations to cope with stress effectively.

Three coping strategies we use to handle stress: Task Oriented (ie) finding solutions to the problem; Emotion Oriented (ie) having an emotional reaction to the problem; and Avoidance Oriented (ie) creating distractions to avoid the problem.

Positive ways to handle stress based on our own strategies…

  • Task Oriented–Take control of the situation. Make decisions with logic and reason. Implement solutions. Look at the situation as a challenge instead of a problem. Remain positive.
  • Emotion Oriented–Journaling. Meditation and positive affirmation. Humor. Using visualization techniques to reframe the situation in your mind. Self compassion.
  • Avoidance Oriented–Talk to a trusted friend. Ask for help, it’s ok to admit overwhelm. Set a timer to allow yourself to work on the problem in short bursts. Time Management.

Stress affects the body negatively, and shows up in a myriad of ways. Headaches, weight gain or loss, trouble sleeping, heart issues, difficulty concentrating, etc. It’s time to get it under control.

You may not be able to eliminate stress completely from your life, but you can minimize it, and control the way it controls you.
